Improving Operational Accuracy

In the last ten years, Asian manufacturers have gained competencies, employed improved technologies (often pirated) and gained size to seriously challenge North American manufacturing. Couple this with extremely low labor costs and an open door free trade policy and we have a situation in which most people in this room today work for companies who are in competition with Chinese manufacturers. Typically, their production costs are 1/3 to 1/5 of similar products made in the USA.

Fork Lifts - The Underlying Hazards

As a Manager of Engineering, Maintenance and Safety I was always challenged to create real awareness of the hazards encountered during routine safety meetings. This article is intended both for safety professionals and also for use by supervisors as a start to discussion for individuals in these routine safety meetings. For each class of underlying hazard we briefly describe a few recent cases as illustrations and then discusses the common patterns of behavior (latent, systemic deficiencies) as well as the specific causes of these predominantly fatal accidents.

Ex Rel Strategy

This strategy is based on a reduction in downtime from 15%+ to 3% total plant downtime (excluding curtailment and product change) by June 2004. This number will be further reduced to 2% by January 2006 all of this, while maintaining budgetary control. This will involve multiple implementation phases.

Contract Maintenance

One of the many well-worn avenues toward improvement and cost-reduction in the maintenance area is to use "contract labor." This allows the owner much greater flexibility, both in day-to-day operation and in the size and composition of the crews being used. Selecting a contractor and writing a contract, however, requires evaluating many factors.
