Many experts in the reliability improvement field suggest that one specific process; technique, approach or methodology holds the key to achieving World Class Reliability. Each reliability improvement initiative starts from a different point with varying time frames for completion. The single dimensional approach has many potential pitfalls, which are best illustrated in the often-quoted saying, “If the only tool in your bag is a hammer, all your problems look like nails.” We suggest that all the appropriate tools should be considered for use to match the skill level, the prevailing culture, and the anticipated time scale for completion.
This article is primarily addressed to those "trapped in the chaos of events" at plants operating in the Reactive or barely Planned modes. It describes how to choose the most effective improvement processes (tools) to establish order out of chaos and gain control of the situation. It continues to explain how and when to use these processes, and to discuss suitable implementation strategies. Finally, the benefits of this approach are illustrated using a real-life case study.
