In the last ten years, Asian manufacturers have gained competencies, employed improved technologies (often pirated) and gained size to seriously challenge North American manufacturing. Couple this with extremely low labor costs and an open door free trade policy and we have a situation in which most people in this room today work for companies who are in competition with Chinese manufacturers. Typically, their production costs are 1/3 to 1/5 of similar products made in the USA.
